The planned meeting follows a massive overnight bombardment where Russia launched nearly 500 drones and 40 missiles across Ukraine, resulting in at least two fatalities and dozens wounded, including children. This latest assault marks the second brutal airstrike on the nation in less than a week, underscoring the intense pressure on Kyiv as diplomatic efforts intensify.
The extensive aerial offensive targeted the capital Kyiv, along with regions in Ukraine’s northeast and south, causing significant infrastructure damage. A third of Kyiv was left without heat in sub-zero temperatures following the Saturday morning attack, with air raid alerts lasting nearly ten hours. Authorities confirmed two deaths in Kyiv and its surrounding area, alongside at least 46 injuries, highlighting the devastating human cost of the sustained aggression.
These relentless bombardments, which included sophisticated Kinzhal missiles and Shahed drones, convey Moscow’s “true attitude” towards peace, according to President Zelensky. Speaking shortly before his departure for the US, he stated that while Russian representatives engage in protracted talks, their actions speak louder, demonstrating a clear intent to inflict greater suffering on Ukraine. The upcoming meeting with Donald Trump is centered on a 20-point peace plan, which President Zelensky indicated was approximately 90 per cent complete. Key discussions are expected to revolve around securing robust security guarantees for Ukraine and resolving complex territorial disputes, particularly concerning the eastern regions of Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia. Zelensky has firmly asserted that Ukraine possesses “red lines” regarding its sovereignty, yet he remains confident that a viable compromise can be forged through negotiations.
Significant divergence persists between Kyiv and Moscow on territorial issues, forming a major obstacle to any peace agreement. Russia insists on Ukraine’s withdrawal from a substantial, densely urbanized portion of eastern Donetsk, a territory its forces have struggled to fully capture. He underscored that any proposed plan from President Zelensky would require his ultimate approval, stating, “He doesn’t have anything until I approve it.” Trump also conveyed his expectation to engage in direct communication with Russian President Vladimir Putin “soon,” signaling his active involvement in shaping potential resolutions to the conflict.
