Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has detailed the pivotal role of the Ikwerre people in securing President Bola Tinubu’s victory in Rivers State during the 2023 presidential election. Wike emphasized that the substantial votes from Ikwerre communities were instrumental in the win, a point he reiterated during a recent Christmas outreach in Emohua and Ikwerre local government areas.
Speaking to the Ikwerre community, Wike highlighted the considerable risks taken by the ethnic group in backing Tinubu when his electoral success was far from certain. He contrasted this genuine commitment with what he termed “new supporters” who are now vocally aligning with the president, suggesting their loyalty is opportunistic rather than based on enduring support during challenging times.
Wike asserted that his political group has been steadfast in its support for President Tinubu since 2023, and any shifts in rhetoric do not alter the fundamental facts of their allegiance. He stressed that true political support is demonstrated when stakes are high and outcomes are uncertain, not when success is already a foregone conclusion. This sentiment was echoed as he urged for unwavering backing of President Tinubu to ensure his administration’s success.
The FCT Minister articulated a vision for the Southern region of Nigeria, stating that it must be allowed to complete its constitutional eight-year tenure in power. He indicated that regardless of political party affiliations, the focus should be on enabling President Tinubu to succeed. This period, he suggested, is crucial for the South’s political progression.
