The EPA says these new pesticides are safe for our food, but experts are raising forever chemical concerns.

The Environmental Protection Agency has recently approved ten new pesticide products containing the insecticide isocycloseram. This decision permits their widespread use on various agricultural crops, including potatoes, citrus fruits, and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli. However, this approval immediately sparked significant controversy among environmental experts and advocacy groups. They cite serious concerns regarding the potential presence of harmful PFAS chemicals within these new pesticides.

The EPA maintains that isocycloseram poses no human health risks when used strictly according to its registered labels. The agency conducted comprehensive toxicity studies across multiple species and life stages to reach this conclusion. It specifically evaluated children’s safety, developmental effects, and potential reproductive and chronic health impacts. The EPA also completed an environmental fate and exposure analysis as part of its assessment process.

Critics strongly argue that isocycloseram contains per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, commonly known as PFAS. These “forever chemicals” are notorious for their extreme persistence and bioaccumulation properties within the environment. Alexis Temkin, Vice President of Science at the Environmental Working Group, publicly called the EPA’s approval “concerning.”

Temkin highlighted existing scientific studies linking PFAS exposure to a range of adverse health outcomes. These include decreased fertility, increased risk of certain cancers, and other negative health effects. Such serious potential health concerns fuel strong and sustained opposition to the EPA’s recent pesticide approvals.

The EPA, however, counters these assertions by stating isocycloseram does not fit its official definition of a PFAS chemical. Federal guidelines define PFAS as compounds possessing two or more fluorinated carbons within their structure. Isocycloseram, uniquely possessing only a single fluorinated carbon, reportedly lacks the persistence and bioaccumulation properties commonly associated with “forever chemicals.”

Dr. P. Lee Ferguson, an environmental analytical chemist and professor at Duke University, offered a nuanced perspective on the chemical. He noted isocycloseram differs significantly from traditional PFAS, demonstrating some breakdown in the environment. However, Dr. Ferguson strongly emphasized the clear need for more detailed studies to fully understand its long-term health and environmental effects.

Dr. Ferguson explained that any potential for harm depends crucially on several factors. These include the quantity of isocycloseram used and its specific breakdown rates in various conditions. These vital factors currently remain largely unknown, underscoring the necessity for further robust scientific investigation.

The EPA subsequently issued a “fact check” statement to address what it termed “misinformation” surrounding the pesticide approvals. This document reiterated the agency’s rigorous evaluation process, outlining various studies performed. However, experts interviewed outside the agency declined to comment on the specific validity or results of these internal EPA tests.

Regarding immediate consumer safety, Dr. Debra Cherry, an associate professor of environmental medicine, expressed no particular concerns. She sees no significant immediate health risk from consuming fresh produce treated with these new pesticides. Consumers can also rinse produce thoroughly before eating to potentially reduce exposure.

Dr. Cherry voiced deeper concerns about broader ecological impacts and vulnerable populations. She specifically mentioned potential adverse effects on vital pollinators, such as bees, and the overall ecosystem’s delicate balance. Furthermore, she expressed worry about infants consuming contaminated water sources in the future.

The EPA advises concerned consumers to purchase organic products if they are worried about pesticide exposure. However, the agency readily acknowledges that even products labeled organic might contain trace amounts of these ubiquitous chemicals. Completely avoiding PFAS exposure remains challenging due to their widespread presence from various environmental sources.
