Nigerian police have apprehended two individuals identified as suspected kingpins of a notorious kidnapping syndicate operating across four northern states. The arrests were made during a targeted intelligence-led operation in Kwara State, according to a statement from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
The operation, executed by operatives from the force intelligence department’s intelligence response team in collaboration with the Kwara State command, intercepted the suspects along the Komen–Masallaci axis in Kaiama Local Government Area. Preliminary investigations suggest the apprehended individuals are key members of a gang responsible for widespread banditry and kidnapping.
The suspects have been identified as Abubakar Usman, 26, also known as Siddi, and Shehu Mohammadu, 30, known as Gide. Their alleged criminal activities have impacted communities in Zamfara, Katsina, Niger, and Kwara states, causing significant distress and insecurity.
During the arrest, authorities recovered substantial evidence, including an AK-47 rifle loaded with 20 rounds of live ammunition and ₦500,000 in cash. Police believe the cash represents unspent ransom money, further implicating the suspects in kidnapping operations.
Further seized from the suspects was a brand new Honda Ace 125 motorcycle, valued at ₦1,850,000. Investigations revealed this vehicle was purchased using funds obtained from ransom payments, highlighting the financial operations of the criminal network.
Adding to the gravity of the findings, preliminary investigations indicate that this gang also functions as a supplier of arms and ammunition to other criminal elements. This dual role suggests a more extensive and dangerous network than initially presumed.
One of the arrested suspects, Abubakar Usman, had reportedly been under police surveillance prior to his apprehension. He was recently featured in a viral social media video where he was seen displaying firearms and considerable sums of money, drawing police attention.
The NPF stated that both suspects are currently cooperating with investigators, a move that authorities hope will lead to the apprehension of other syndicate members and the recovery of additional weapons. This cooperation is crucial for dismantling the entire criminal enterprise.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, commended the operatives for their professionalism and dedication in carrying out the successful mission. He reiterated the Force’s unwavering commitment to combating criminal networks and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens across the nation.
