PDP State Chairmen Rally Behind Turaki: A Sign of Stability or a Temporary Truce?

The news coming out of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in late 2025 reveals a united front, at least on the surface. Reports suggest that a substantial number of state chairmen are throwing their weight behind the newly appointed National Chairman, Kabiru Turaki. This declaration of support arrives after the Ibadan National Convention. However, is this a genuine sign of cohesion, or just a carefully constructed image to mask deeper fractures within the party? It’s worth noting the praise heaped upon Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State for hosting a “seamless” national convention. Acknowledgement also goes to other PDP governors, including those from Bauchi, Adamawa, Plateau, Zamfara and Osun states. These nods toward the PDP Governors’ Forum underscore the significant role these figures play in stabilizing the party. Indeed, their influence cannot be overstated. State governors often wield considerable power within political parties in Nigeria, controlling resources and influencing local party structures.

Still, the speed and uniformity of this endorsement raise an eyebrow. Parties often coalesce around new leaders, especially after potentially divisive conventions. Yet, history tells us these displays of solidarity can be fleeting. Remember the last time there was a leadership transition? Similar assurances were made, and we know how that eventually unfolded. The road to power is paved with good intentions.

The PDP’s new National Working Committee (NWC), spearheaded by Turaki, faces immense pressure. The expectation is that this group can navigate the PDP through internal strife and external challenges.
