Local Government Recognition: A Sign of Progress or Just Politics?

The Forum of Heads of Local Government Administration in Nigeria (FOHOLGAN) recently held its annual conference, handing out awards to recognize outstanding leaders. The Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) Chairman, Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, was among those honored. Seeing these kinds of events always makes me wonder – what’s really driving them?

The conference theme focused on “sustaining professionalism” in local government, a crucial topic. Outgoing FOHOLGAN President Abdulrahman Marafa mentioned the challenge of getting all states actively involved. A unified front is always better, but nationwide buy-in can be tough, particularly when you consider the diverse political landscapes across Nigeria.

Marafa highlighted successes like building relationships with other organizations and advocating for better conditions for Local Government Service Commission heads. These are definitely steps in the right direction. Yet, you have to ask: do these collaborations truly translate into tangible benefits for the average citizen?

The Chairman of the Association of Local Government Service Commission Chairmen in Nigeria, Femi Idris, encouraged more states to participate in the association. Participation is great, but accountability and concrete action are what really matter. Are these conferences resulting in actual improvements in local governance, or are they primarily networking and photo opportunities?

AMAC Chairman Maikalangu, receiving his award, reaffirmed his commitment to delivering benefits to residents. Politicians always say the right things, of course. Ultimately, the proof will be in the services and infrastructure improvements experienced by the people he serves.

These events, honestly, can be a bit of a mixed bag. Recognition can motivate, but it also carries the risk of complacency. The real question is whether this kind of recognition leads to lasting, positive change on the ground. Past experience suggests careful observation is needed. We need to see beyond the ceremonies and focus on the actual outcomes. After all, local government is where citizens should feel the most direct impact of good governance.
