The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a strong call for the outright rejection of the current tax law, citing concerns over its alleged distortion and lack of inclusivity. The union leadership stressed the critical need for fairness and broad consultation in the development of fiscal policies that impact the nation’s workforce and citizens.
NLC President, Joe Ajaero, articulated the congress’s position in a statement titled, “Our hope lies in collective action.” He emphasized that any legislation affecting workers must be meticulously drafted to prevent significant errors or manipulative political interference that could disproportionately harm the majority of the population.
The labour union’s stance underscores a demand for social and tax justice, asserting that all citizens deserve equitable access to essential services. This includes quality healthcare, education, and robust security, alongside the fundamental respect for workers’ rights and fair compensation for their contributions.
Ajaero further elaborated on the potential pitfalls of hastily enacted legislation, stating, “It is better to patiently craft a law that is broadly co-created and owned than rush into one filled with serious errors and outright political manipulations.” This highlights a preference for deliberative policy-making over expediency.
The NLC president also underscored the vital importance of unity among workers and the broader Nigerian populace. He urged citizens to stand together against policies that impose undue hardship or exploit the population, cautioning against divisive tactics based on tribal, religious, or regional lines.
