Nigeria Approves US Strikes Against ISIS Terrorists

Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters has confirmed that joint military operations against Islamic State (ISIS) elements in the country’s northwest were conducted with the explicit approval of the Federal Government. The announcement, made by Director of Defence Information Major General Samaila Uba, detailed the coordinated strikes carried out by Nigerian and United States forces.

These precision strikes, as described in a statement, are part of a broader, ongoing strategy to dismantle terrorist networks and criminal organizations that pose a significant threat to Nigeria’s national security. The operation aimed to degrade the capabilities of targeted terrorist groups while meticulously minimizing civilian casualties.

The collaboration underscores Nigeria’s determination, in partnership with international allies, to combat transnational terrorism. It highlights a commitment to preventing foreign fighters from establishing or expanding their presence within the nation’s borders.

Major General Uba emphasized that the joint operation reflects Nigeria’s dedication to addressing evolving security challenges through coordinated and lawful military actions. The Defence Headquarters reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property across the nation.

The strikes follow weeks of heightened concern from the U.S. administration regarding an escalation of violent attacks against Christian communities in northern Nigeria, particularly in Sokoto State. U.S. officials had previously characterized the violence as reaching unprecedented levels.

Earlier in November, U.S. President Donald Trump had directed the Pentagon to prepare for potential action if Nigeria did not demonstrate increased efforts to safeguard persecuted religious communities. This latest operation signals a decisive response to these security concerns and a strengthened resolve for international cooperation in counter-terrorism efforts.

The Defence Headquarters reiterated its unwavering commitment to safeguarding citizens and supporting all joint, inter-agency, and international initiatives aimed at restoring lasting peace and security throughout Nigeria. This coordinated approach is seen as crucial in confronting the complex and multifaceted nature of modern security threats.
