MotoGP Defers Leg Wing Ban to 2027 Amid Safety and Aero Debate

MotoGP officials have opted to postpone a proposed ban on the controversial ‘leg wings’ for the upcoming 2026 season, citing a lack of objective safety risks directly attributable to their use. The decision means these aerodynamic appendages, pioneered by Aprilia and subsequently adopted by Honda, will remain a feature on the grid for at least another year. This pause comes despite initial concerns raised regarding rider safety following the final Grand Prix of the 2025 campaign, which sparked a significant debate among teams and governing bodies.

These distinctive aerodynamic elements are strategically positioned on the side of the seat, immediately behind a rider’s legs. Aprilia first introduced them on their RS-GP machinery, aiming to enhance stability and aerodynamic efficiency, particularly at high speeds and during cornering. Honda later followed suit, integrating similar designs into its RC213V bikes, underscoring the perceived performance advantages offered by these innovative solutions in the highly competitive premier class.

The debate surrounding leg wings intensified immediately after the Valencia test day, which traditionally follows the season’s final race. Concerns primarily revolved around a hypothetical scenario: whether these appendages could potentially trap a rider to their motorcycle in the event of a high-speed crash, thereby exacerbating injuries or preventing a swift separation from the machine. This potential risk was highlighted as a critical safety consideration, prompting an immediate review by the sport’s governing bodies.

Responding to these emerging safety discussions, the FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme) circulated a directive to all MotoGP teams. This proposed regulation aimed to specifically outlaw the leg wings from the very first round of the 2026 championship. The directive outlined precise technical dimensions and limitations, stipulating that certain motorcycle parts within a defined area “must not exceed, viewed from above, a conical area ranging from a width of 450mm to 500mm,” with specific exceptions for footpegs and exhaust covers.

The proposal, however, quickly faced significant opposition. Manufacturers like Aprilia and Honda argued that the 2025 season had not witnessed a single incident directly attributable to the leg wings that would warrant such an immediate and drastic safety intervention. These teams had invested substantial resources, both financial and in terms of research and development, into studying and optimizing these aerodynamic solutions in sophisticated wind tunnel testing environments to improve their bikes’ overall performance and rider comfort.

For the FIM to introduce an immediate regulatory change without the standard notice period, unanimous agreement from all participating manufacturers was required. This crucial consensus proved elusive. Predictably, both Aprilia and Honda vociferously opposed the ban, defending their investment and the perceived performance benefits. This resistance effectively blocked the directive’s implementation for the 2026 season, highlighting the complexities of introducing mid-term technical rule changes in a sport driven by intense technological competition.

Beyond genuine safety concerns, some observers suggested that the proposed ban also carried strategic undertones. Certain manufacturers, who had not yet fully developed or implemented similar aerodynamic solutions, were perceived as attempting to leverage safety arguments to halt the development progress of their rivals. This dynamic underscored the broader competitive landscape of MotoGP, where technical innovation often becomes a battleground for performance advantage, sometimes intertwining with regulatory discussions.

Consequently, the issue of leg wings will now be revisited as part of a much larger and comprehensive regulatory overhaul slated for the 2027 MotoGP season. This significant shift will see a complete redesign of the technical specifications for the motorcycles. Among the most prominent changes will be a switch to smaller-capacity 850cc engines, a reduction from the current 1000cc units, aimed at managing speeds and promoting more competitive racing.

Crucially, the 2027 regulations are expected to impose extensive and stringent restrictions on aerodynamics across the entire motorcycle. This broader approach means that specific debates over individual aerodynamic elements, such as leg wings, will become largely moot. The new rules intend to fundamentally redefine the aerodynamic landscape of MotoGP, moving towards a more standardized and potentially less extreme design philosophy for all competing machines.

This decision to defer the ban, while allowing current designs to continue for 2026, sets the stage for a dramatic transformation in 2027. It reflects the ongoing challenge for MotoGP’s governing bodies to balance rapid technological innovation with paramount rider safety and the desire to maintain competitive parity. The upcoming changes signal a deliberate effort to reshape the sport’s technical direction, influencing race dynamics and the development strategies of all manufacturers for years to come.
