Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has publicly detailed the reasons behind his political divergence with Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The governor stated that he will not support President Bola Tinubu’s bid for re-election in 2027, citing a fundamental disagreement over the future of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the principles of multiparty democracy.
Makinde recounted a pivotal moment in his career, recalling how he secured a significant $1 million contract with Mobil at the age of 29 in 1997. He contrasted this early success with Wike’s presumed career stage at the time, suggesting that Wike had likely just completed his law studies and was beginning his political journey as a local government chairman.
The governor pinpointed a specific meeting with Wike, President Tinubu, and other key figures as the catalyst for their political fallout. During this encounter, Makinde stated that Wike volunteered to “hold the PDP” for President Tinubu in anticipation of the 2027 elections, a declaration that deeply unsettled the Oyo State governor.
Makinde expressed his dismay at Wike’s unsolicited pledge, emphasizing that while Wike has the right to support any candidate, others who champion the survival of multiparty democracy and the PDP should also have the freedom to make their own political choices.
He revealed that despite attempts to resolve the issue, the situation remained intractable, compelling him to adopt a firm stance. Makinde declared his immediate withdrawal from any such arrangement, asserting his right to determine his own political affiliations and roles in the upcoming 2027 elections.
These disclosures underscore the growing schism within the PDP, with two discernible factions emerging. One faction, reportedly aligned with Wike, appears to be gravitating towards President Tinubu’s political camp, while the other, led by Makinde, advocates for the preservation of the party’s independence and the broader principles of democratic pluralism.
