Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has publicly affirmed his qualification to contest for the highest office in Nigeria, while simultaneously declaring his firm opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in the upcoming 2027 general elections. This statement comes amidst growing political speculation and the recent appearance of presidential campaign posters bearing Makinde’s image in various parts of Jigawa State, hinting at his potential interest in the nation’s top leadership role.
Addressing selected journalists in Ibadan, Governor Makinde directly confronted the swirling rumours about his political ambitions. He emphasized that his extensive experience, particularly as a two-term governor, adequately prepares him for the presidency. This declaration sets a clear tone for his political trajectory in the lead-up to the next electoral cycle.
Makinde drew a parallel between his gubernatorial tenure and that of President Tinubu, noting that Tinubu’s path to the presidency also followed two terms as Lagos State governor. By the conclusion of his second term in May 2027, Makinde will have accumulated significant executive experience.

The Oyo State Governor recounted being present at a meeting alongside President Tinubu, Minister Wike, and other dignitaries when the former Rivers State Governor made his controversial declaration. Makinde expressed profound shock at Wike’s statement, clarifying that he would not be a participant in any such political arrangement.
