Kimberlee Singler, a Colorado woman accused of murdering two of her young children, has been extradited from the United Kingdom to the United States to face multiple charges. Her return marks a significant development in the harrowing case that began with the discovery of her daughter and son deceased in their Colorado Springs home in December 2023. Singler was apprehended in London days after authorities in Colorado initiated a search for her.

Singler, 37, now faces two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of her nine-year-old daughter and seven-year-old son. Additionally, prosecutors have charged her with one count of attempted murder related to her 11-year-old daughter, who sustained injuries but survived the incident. Three counts of child abuse and one count of assault are also included in the indictment.

The extradition process was protracted, with Singler resisting her transfer from the UK. Her London defense attorney, Edward Fitzgerald, argued that she should not be extradited, citing that a mandatory sentence of life without parole, which she would face if convicted of first-degree murder in Colorado, violates European human rights law. Mr. Fitzgerald notably represented WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in his own high-profile extradition battle. However, a UK judge rejected Singler’s challenge in January 2024, and her subsequent appeal bid was denied in November.

Authorities located and arrested Singler four days later in London’s affluent Chelsea neighborhood. The motive for her presence in the UK remains unclear. Court documents from the UK reveal that the surviving daughter told an investigator that her mother stated, “God made her do it,” a chilling detail that emerged as the focus of the investigation shifted towards Singler.

The tragic discovery of the children’s bodies on December 19, 2023, followed a critical court order issued the day prior in Colorado. A judge had mandated Singler to comply with an earlier ruling, requiring her to allow the children’s father to take custody of them for the upcoming holidays. She was instructed to either hand them over or bring them to a court hearing on December 20 for the custody exchange.

Police investigations quickly uncovered inconsistencies in Singler’s narrative. Detectives found no footprints in the snow leading to the patio door where she claimed the intruder entered. Furthermore, Singler had attempted to implicate her ex-husband, telling police he “had previously dreamt about killing his family” and was constantly trying to “frame her” and “get her arrested.” However, GPS records definitively placed her ex-husband approximately 80 miles away at the time of the killings, effectively providing him with an alibi.

On the day of the scheduled custody hearing, Singler filed a motion requesting a delay, informing the judge that she and her children had been attacked, and two of them were murdered. She sought time to grieve and “gain my bearings after this incident,” a move that came after the police had already discovered the deceased children and begun questioning her account of events.
