Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi was hospitalized following a “violent arrest” last week, her family reported. The 53-year-old Iranian human rights activist informed her family during a phone call on Sunday that she was taken to an emergency department twice after being “attacked by plain clothed agents with severe and repeated baton blows to the head and neck.”
Iranian authorities have not yet commented on the incident. However, they previously stated that Mohammadi was detained for making “provocative remarks” at a memorial ceremony in the city of Mashhad on Friday. The Nobel Committee and award-winning filmmaker Jafar Panahi are among those urging for her immediate release.
Mohammadi, a prominent figure and vice-president of the Defenders of Human Rights Center in Iran, was recognized with the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her tireless activism against female oppression and her advocacy for human rights in Iran. She has previously spent over a decade imprisoned for her work.
According to the Narges Foundation, eyewitnesses cited by Mohammadi’s family indicated she was assaulted by approximately 15 plainclothes agents at the memorial. Some assailants were reportedly seen pulling her hair and striking her with clubs and batons.
During her Sunday evening phone call, Mohammadi conveyed the “intensity of the blows was so heavy, forceful, and repeated that she was taken to the hospital emergency room twice.” She also stated she did not know which security authority was detaining her and had received no explanation. Her physical condition at the time of the call was described as unwell.
The Narges Foundation further reported that Mohammadi claimed to be accused of “co-operating with the Israeli government” and that her captors issued a death threat against her, stating, “We will put your mother into mourning.” Two other activists, Sepideh Gholian and Pouran Nazemi, also detained at the memorial, were reportedly beaten.
Mashhad prosecutor Hasan Hematifar confirmed on Saturday that Mohammadi was among 39 individuals arrested. He alleged that she and Javad Alikordi, the brother of the deceased activist, encouraged attendees to chant “norm-breaking slogans” and “disturb the peace.”
The Norwegian Nobel Committee expressed deep concern over the “brutal arrest” and urged Iranian authorities to “ensure her safety and integrity, and to release her without conditions.” Fellow filmmakers Jafar Panahi and Mohammad Rasoulof, along with over a dozen activists, issued a joint statement condemning the events as a “stark reflection of the worrying state of freedom and security” in Iran.
