Ikenga Ugochinyere, the federal lawmaker representing Ideato Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, has announced his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). His decision stems from what he describes as an irreconcilable internal crisis that has left the party “destroyed beyond redemption,” a situation he attributes to the actions of a few influential individuals. The lawmaker made this significant disclosure during a Christmas solidarity visit from his constituents at his Akokwa residence in Ideato North Local Government Area.
Ugochinyere elaborated on his reasons for exiting the opposition party, stating that the damage inflicted since the 2023 general elections has rendered continued affiliation a form of “self-denial.” He asserted that his earnest efforts to stabilise the party proved futile, encountering elements primarily intent on its destruction. For him, the only viable course of action was to disassociate from a party he believes has lost its core principles and direction.
Central to his allegations are claims directed at the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and his associates. Ugochinyere explicitly accused them of a deliberate mission to dismantle the PDP, asserting their success through the forceful installation of individuals like Damagun and Samuel Anyanwu into the national leadership. He maintained that these appointments were made in blatant disregard of the party’s established procedures and democratic norms.
The departing lawmaker has indicated that he will publicly announce his new political platform in due course. He confirmed that extensive consultations are currently underway with other prominent politicians and various groups across the federation to chart a strategic path forward. Ugochinyere urged his loyal supporters to remain resolute and steadfast as these pivotal political developments unfold.
Beyond the immediate political realignment, Ugochinyere reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to his legislative mandate for the people of Ideato Nation. He assured his constituents of continued effective representation, pledging that every community within his constituency would experience the tangible, positive impact of his legislative endeavours. This commitment, he stressed, remains paramount regardless of his party affiliation.
He further detailed his approach to ongoing community projects across Ideato Federal Constituency. Ugochinyere explained that the commissioning of these initiatives would not be rushed, but rather conducted only upon their final completion. A crucial step, he highlighted, involves allowing the beneficiaries to utilise the projects first, thereby confirming their durability and fitness for purpose before any formal inauguration.
Turning to the intricate landscape of Imo State politics, Ugochinyere sharply criticised the state government for what he termed “infantile” attempts to impede his engagements with his constituents. He condemned the alleged blocking of venues intended for his public meetings, describing such actions as childish and ultimately ineffective in diminishing the profound affection his people hold for him.
He recounted specific instances where planned venues in Ideato South were allegedly denied, citing dubious excuses such as land disputes or government bans on events in state premises. Despite these obstacles, Ugochinyere noted that the resilience and loyalty of his supporters ensured the events proceeded, often relocating to private residences, underscoring their determination to convene.
The lawmaker expressed bewilderment at the state government’s perceived efforts to prematurely heighten political tensions, particularly when general elections are not imminent. He suggested that these actions betray a sense of jitters within the government, stemming from his escalating popularity among political rivals within the state. He drew parallels to past electoral contests, anticipating similar challenges.
In a direct appeal, Ugochinyere called upon the Federal Government, the Inspector General of Police, the National Security Adviser, and other heads of security agencies to pay urgent attention to the unfolding situation in Imo State. He urged them to intervene and call the state government to order, warning that unchecked political aggression risks escalating the already delicate security climate within the state.
