Ibadan Airport Cleared for Commercial Flights After Upgrades

Commercial flight operations are set to resume at the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan following approval from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). This significant development comes after extensive upgrades undertaken by the Oyo State Government aimed at elevating the airport to international standards.

The NCAA’s decision signifies a crucial step forward for air travel connectivity in the region. The approval was granted after a thorough review of the airport’s safety-critical facilities, operational procedures, and mitigation strategies, reflecting recent enhancements and provided information. This paves the way for scheduled flights to commence.

Key upgrades that facilitated this approval include a substantial extension and widening of the runway, ensuring it can accommodate larger aircraft. Improvements to the airfield lighting system were also implemented, enhancing safety and operational capabilities, especially during low-visibility conditions.

Furthermore, the airport now boasts a new 500,000-litre aviation fuel storage facility. This addition is vital for supporting sustained flight operations and reducing turnaround times for airlines. A new Protocol Lounge has also been constructed, offering enhanced facilities for passengers and dignitaries.

The official announcement was made in a statement released by Dr. Suleiman Olanrewaju, the Special Adviser to the Oyo State Governor on Media. The statement confirmed that the NCAA’s approval is documented in a letter dated December 16, 2025, addressed to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

The NCAA’s letter explicitly states the issuance of a provisional interim operational permit for the commencement of scheduled flight operations. This permit is a testament to the successful completion of the upgrade projects and adherence to regulatory requirements, marking a new era for Ibadan’s air transport infrastructure.
