FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino has announced his intention to step down from his role early next year, marking the end of a notable, albeit brief, tenure as the bureau’s second-highest official.

Bongino confirmed his departure plans in a statement shared on social media platform X, expressing gratitude to President Trump, Attorney General Bondi, and Director Patel for the opportunity to serve. He also extended his thanks to the American people for the privilege of public service.

When questioned by reporters, President Donald Trump indicated that Bongino’s decision was motivated by a desire to return to his popular podcast. Trump commended Bongino’s performance, suggesting his move was a personal choice to resume his media career.

Speculation surrounding Bongino’s position intensified in July following reports of a disagreement with Attorney General Pam Bondi concerning the administration’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case files. The alleged clash raised questions about his standing within the FBI.

Further complicating matters, Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey was appointed as a “co-deputy director” in August, a move that appeared to involve sharing Bongino’s responsibilities. However, at the time, the White House and President Trump refuted any suggestions of internal conflict.

A White House spokesperson stated that President Trump had assembled a highly capable team focused on law and order, emphasizing unity and seamless execution of their duties. The spokesperson dismissed any attempts to create division as baseless and distracting from crucial work on public safety.

Bongino, 50, has a background in law enforcement, serving two years with the New York Police Department before joining the Secret Service in 1999. During his time with the Secret Service, he was part of the protective details for former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

Following his departure from the Secret Service in 2011, Bongino pursued a career in media and politics, including an unsuccessful Senate campaign in Maryland. He subsequently launched various iterations of his radio show, which evolved into “The Dan Bongino Show,” currently broadcast on Rumble.

His media engagements also include extensive work as a political commentator for Fox News. From 2021 to 2023, he hosted “Canceled in the USA,” a show where he interviewed individuals he believed had faced media backlash for their expressed opinions.
