Multiple brands of dog biscuits have been voluntarily recalled across seven U.S. states due to the potential presence of salmonella, a bacterium that can cause serious illness in both pets and humans. Consumers Supply Distributing, LLC, based in Iowa, initiated the recall for specific lots of Country Vet Biscuits and Heartland Harvest Dog Biscuits.
The affected products include four-pound bags of Country Vet Biscuits, Original Meaty Flavor, identified by UPC 899623000463, lot code 40906513, and an expiration date of September 6, 2026. Also included are four-pound bags of Heartland Harvest Dog Biscuits, with UPC 840227340691, lot code 40906513, and the same expiration date.
These recalled dog treats were distributed to retail stores in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Montana, and Nebraska. The recall was prompted by a routine sampling program conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which detected the presence of salmonella in the finished products.
The company has halted production and distribution of the affected lot numbers as both the FDA and Consumers Supply Distributing, LLC investigate the source of the contamination. While no illnesses have been reported to date, consumers are strongly advised to immediately discard the recalled treats or return them to the point of purchase for a full refund.
Salmonella infections in pets can manifest as lethargy, diarrhea (which may be bloody), fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, and abdominal pain. Even healthy pets that contract salmonella can transmit the bacteria to other animals and humans. Pet owners are urged to contact their veterinarian if their animal exhibits any symptoms after consuming the recalled product.
Humans can contract salmonella infections within 12 to 72 hours of consuming contaminated food, with symptoms typically lasting four to seven days. Common signs include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Individuals with weakened immune systems, the elderly, and young children are at higher risk for severe infections.
Salmonella is a significant public health concern in the United States, ranking as the second leading cause of foodborne illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that salmonella causes 1.35 million illnesses, 420 deaths, and 26,500 hospitalizations annually.
This recall follows similar incidents earlier this year involving other pet food products. In October, Wisconsin-based Foodynamics recalled various freeze-dried pet treats due to potential salmonella contamination, and Minnesota-based Raw Bistro Pet Fare also issued recalls for specific beef entrée products.
