Defending champions Ivory Coast have commenced their Africa Cup of Nations title defence with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mozambique at the Stade de Marrakech. Manchester United winger Amad Diallo scored the decisive goal four minutes into the second half, securing a crucial three points for the Elephants in their opening fixture of the tournament.

The breakthrough came after a frustrating first half for the Ivorian side, who dominated possession but struggled to break down a resolute Mozambique defence. Amad Diallo reacted sharply to a loose ball inside the penalty area, firing a low shot into the bottom corner past goalkeeper Ernan Siluane to finally break the deadlock.

Ivory Coast had started the match brightly, with early chances falling to Yan Diomande. His cross nearly found the net in the opening minute, and he later forced Siluane into a smart save with an effort that was tipped over the crossbar, highlighting Mozambique’s defensive organisation.

Despite the early pressure, Ivory Coast found it difficult to convert their territorial advantage into clear-cut scoring opportunities.
