One person died and three others sustained injuries following a brazen shooting attack on a Lamborghini SUV in Chicago’s River North neighborhood early Sunday. Gunmen opened fire on the vehicle, marking one of several violent incidents reported across the United States during the recent holiday weekend. The incident unfolded around 2:35 a.m. in the 400 block of North LaSalle Drive, prompting a swift police response to the upscale area.
Authorities confirmed that four men were entering a green Lamborghini SUV when four suspects approached them on foot and initiated the gunfire. A 34-year-old man suffered multiple gunshot wounds and later succumbed to his injuries at Northwestern Hospital. Three additional men, aged 35, 36, and 43, also sustained injuries in the ambush.
The 36-year-old victim was shot in the chest, while the 43-year-old sustained a back wound, and the 35-year-old received multiple body shots. All three injured individuals were transported to Northwestern Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment. Police have not yet released details regarding their current medical conditions, but the severity of their wounds suggests significant trauma.
Investigators are actively working to determine the motive behind the targeted assault, which remains unclear. The suspects immediately fled the scene in a vehicle following the shooting and are currently at large. No arrests have been made as of Sunday evening, according to Chicago police, who continue their search for those responsible for the violent act.
Video footage from the vicinity showed law enforcement officers cordoning off the area around the green SUV as forensic teams meticulously collected evidence. In an effort to expedite the investigation, Cook County Crime Stoppers announced a substantial $10,000 reward for any information that directly leads to an arrest and conviction in the case.
Paul Rutherford, executive director of Cook County Crime Stoppers, emphasized the severity of the incident. He stated that this was “a brazen and violent act that took one life and left three others fighting for their lives.” Rutherford urged the public for assistance, adding that “someone knows who is responsible. Your information, no matter how small it may seem, could be the key to bringing justice to the victims and their families.”
The Chicago shooting occurred amidst a wave of other serious violent incidents reported nationwide over the post-Christmas period. In downtown Fort Lauderdale, Florida, five people were hospitalised after a separate shooting incident early Sunday near the 300 block of Southwest 2nd Street, an area known for its late-night establishments. Authorities have indicated this incident appears isolated, with no ongoing public threat, and no arrests have been announced.
Concurrently, downtown Phoenix, Arizona, experienced another shooting just before 2:30 a.m. Sunday, near the intersection of 1st and Washington streets. In this incident, one man sustained life-threatening injuries, and three women were also wounded. While the women are expected to recover, the man remains in critical condition. Phoenix investigators have not yet identified any suspects in connection with that attack.
These incidents contribute to the concerning statistics on gun violence across the United States. According to the Gun Violence Archive, the nation recorded at least 405 mass shooting incidents by the close of the year, a figure that defines a mass shooting as a minimum of four victims shot, either injured or killed, excluding the shooter. This number represents a decrease from 503 mass shootings reported during the same period in the preceding year and continues a downward trend from 689 incidents in 2021.
