Adebayo Explains Refusal to Ally: Why Integrity Matters in Nigerian Politics

Prince Adewole Adebayo, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has clarified his stance on political alliances, emphasizing that his opposition to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu does not equate to a willingness to work with any individual regardless of their background or integrity. Adebayo stated that while the SDP is open to forming coalitions, they will not partner with those who lack the essential qualities for national leadership. He believes that key proponents of potential mergers often fall short in integrity, ideological coherence, and ethical grounding, making them unsuitable for steering the nation towards recovery. His frustration with the current administration stems from specific policy failures and leadership shortcomings, not a general disdain for all political figures. He made it clear that this critical perspective does not blind him to the flaws of others who might seek to align with his party. During an event in Akure, attended with his wife Queen Lilian, Adebayo articulated his vision for a stronger Nigeria, highlighting that a successful coalition must be built upon a shared vision that genuinely benefits the public. He asserted that simply opposing the incumbent government is not a sufficient basis for unity if the proposed alternatives do not offer a substantively better path forward. The question of whether to form alliances is complex, and Adebayo insists that the character of potential partners is paramount. He revealed that several politicians who expressed interest in joining or collaborating with the SDP were rejected after thorough internal evaluations. These individuals were often characterized as opportunistic, seeking to exploit public discontent without offering concrete solutions to the nation’s pressing issues. Adebayo warned that many opposition figures are primarily driven by a desire to regain access to governmental advantages, rather than a genuine commitment to public service. He cautioned Nigerians to remain vigilant against individuals with dubious backgrounds, particularly those facing legal challenges or corruption accusations, who position themselves as potential leaders. Adebayo reiterated his core belief that authentic reform cannot be achieved through criminality or mere political expediency. He stated, “Being angry with President Tinubu doesn’t mean I’m oblivious. How can I claim he is incapable of governance due to his shortcomings and then ally with someone who is just like him?” Adebayo’s firm stance is that any credible alliance must begin with participants acknowledging their own contributions to the country’s existing problems. He believes that many politicians have made public office their primary source of livelihood. In contrast, he champions the idea that remaining out of power is preferable to betraying the faith of citizens by holding office without true conviction or integrity. The path to effective governance, according to Adebayo, lies in principled leadership and a commitment to public good above personal gain.
