Okay, so, twenty-five days. That’s what they’re saying. Twenty-five days until Abuja hosts this big half marathon thing. I saw the release – all about how Yetunde Olopade from Nilayo Sports Management is promising a “world-class sporting spectacle.”

World-class, huh?

She says Nigeria’s gonna cement its place on the “global athletics map.” Bold words. I mean, I’ve been to a few sporting events here, and sometimes things… well, they don’t quite go to plan. But hey, optimism is good, right?

Apparently preparations are in “final phase with military precision.” Which, if true, would be pretty impressive. “We are building a legacy of excellence, and Abuja is the stage,” she added. Good for her.

This race has a World Athletics Label now – fancy. It’s not just some local jog, apparently. They’re expecting runners from Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, even Europe and Asia. They’re saying this international interest shows that confidence in Nigeria is rising. I hope so. To be honest, a well-organized international event would be a massive boost.

The theme this year is “Steady Stride.” Kinda catchy. Supposedly it reflects the country’s “broader pursuit of excellence.” It’s a bit… much? But I get the idea.

“This race mirrors our national spirit,” Olopade says. Every runner apparently represents commitment. You know, all that jazz. I guess you have to say things like that.

Behind the scenes, they’re measuring routes and training volunteers. The usual stuff. And Abuja is supposed to be turning into “a vibrant festival of colour, competition, and unity.” Let’s hope that last one sticks.

The route sounds pretty scenic, though – City Gate, Central Business District, around Aso Drive. Should give the runners something to look at besides the guy in front of them. For Olopade, it’s “a story of purpose, rhythm, and national pride.” I’d be happy with just a safe and smooth race, personally.

“The world is coming to Abuja,” she declares. “And we are ready.”

Are they, though? Are they really ready? I guess we’ll find out in 25 days.
