Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has declared himself the second most politically reviled figure in Nigeria, trailing only President Bola Tinubu. Wike made this assertion on Saturday during a thanksgiving service in Ochigba, Rivers State, hosted by former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chibudom Nwuche.
He emphasized his steadfast support for President Tinubu during the challenging 2023 general elections, stating that he stood by the president when many others hesitated. Wike recounted the political climate of 2023, noting the uncertainty surrounding Tinubu’s victory and the reluctance of many to openly endorse him.
“We all met and agreed that in politics you must take a stand and take a decision, whether it will be good or bad, but we believed that at the end of the day it would be good, and now it is good,” Wike stated, highlighting the group’s conviction. He stressed that their commitment was evident when it was difficult to publicly declare allegiance.
Wike reassured stakeholders in Rivers State that their past contributions would not be overlooked and pledged continued backing for President Tinubu. He drew a distinction between those who genuinely supported the president before the election and current politicians who now echo slogans of loyalty.
“Thank you for being there for us all through these years. We know those who are ungrateful. Thank you for standing with us,” Wike expressed gratitude, pointing out that many now vocal supporters were absent during the crucial voting period in 2023.
He further elaborated on the significance of their past actions, stating, “Now that we stood and voted for him and Rivers state won, I tell you that all your struggles will not be in vain; we have come to let you know that we are still strong, and Nigerians know us, that when we take a decision, we have taken the decision.”
Wike explained that their decisions are guided by conviction rather than external perceptions. He also indicated that political realignments would intensify from January, underscoring his belief in the sanctity of agreements. “Anything you know you cannot do, don’t say it, and nobody can use us; whatever you have agreed in the morning, you must also agree to at night,” he asserted.
Addressing the current political rhetoric, Wike questioned the sincerity of those now chanting slogans, reminding them of the difficult period when such declarations were absent. “I have never hidden my position; Nigerians know, and you can attest to it,” he declared.
He reiterated his claim of being the second most abused politician after President Tinubu, attributing the criticism to his adherence to agreements. “Why are they abusing me? It is because they know that my stand is ‘agreement is agreement’. When we have agreed on something let us implement it. If we cannot implement it, then don’t let us talk about it.”
Wike concluded by reaffirming his commitment and that of his allies to continue supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, assuring his audience that their position remains unchanged and resolute. “For us we have said that we will continue to support Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. That is the position you took and that is the position you are going to still take. I came to reassure you that no problem.”
