Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has publicly committed to ensuring a smooth and peaceful transfer of power at the conclusion of his second term in 2027. This pledge, made during a Christmas service, underscores his administration’s ambition to establish a new precedent for gubernatorial succession in the state, aiming to avoid any conflict or bitterness traditionally associated with such transitions.
Speaking at St. James’ Anglican Church in Iperu-Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area, Governor Abiodun articulated his vision for a historic handover. He declared that his government would not only “finish well and finish strong” but also successfully transfer authority to a successor, marking what he described as the first peaceful transition in Ogun State’s 50-year history.
Abiodun expressed confidence that he would personally attend both his send-forth ceremony as governor and the swearing-in of his successor, a symbolic act he believes will signify the stability and maturity of the state’s political landscape. This assertion is rooted in what he identifies as robust governance, significant economic growth, and a focus on people-centred projects implemented under his leadership.
The governor highlighted substantial economic advancements during his tenure, noting that Ogun State’s economy has expanded nearly fivefold since he assumed office. He cited a remarkable increase in the state budget, which has grown from approximately N355 billion to over N2.7 trillion, alongside a surge in new factories and industries across the region, indicative of a thriving investment climate.
Further detailing his administration’s achievements, Abiodun pointed to the comprehensive reconstruction of over 2,000 schools, extensive job creation initiatives, and dedicated support for local farmers. These efforts, he stated, have collectively broadened opportunities for residents, though he acknowledged that the work remains ongoing and requires continued public support and prayers to conclude effectively.
Among the key legacies cited by the governor are major infrastructure developments, including the Gateway International Airport and numerous other projects strategically spread across the state’s three senatorial districts. These initiatives are presented as foundational elements contributing to the state’s overall progress and future prosperity, reinforcing his commitment to public service and honouring God through his leadership.
Governor Abiodun also extended praise to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, attributing the gradual stabilisation of the country to his leadership under the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda.’ He noted improvements in the availability of petroleum products, easing inflation rates, and a more stable foreign exchange system as indicators of national recovery and progress.
Shifting his focus to the festive occasion, Abiodun reminded the congregation that Christmas transcends mere celebration or material pursuits. He emphasised that the true essence of the season lies in embodying love, peace, and genuine care for others, particularly those who are less privileged within society. He urged a departure from superficial interpretations of the holiday.
He counselled residents to embrace the spirit of giving, advocating for selfless contributions rather than merely donating unwanted items, drawing a parallel to what he described as God’s priceless gift to humanity. The governor encouraged living a Christ-like life, celebrating with moderation, and avoiding excessive alcohol consumption during the festive period.
The Vicar of St. James’ Anglican Church, Venerable Tolulope Akinwande, delivered a sermon titled “Christmas Is God’s Best Gift to You.” He underscored Christmas as the season commemorating God’s gift of Himself to humanity through Jesus Christ, stressing that the purpose of Christ’s birth is fulfilled only through personal acceptance. Ven. Akinwande also commended Governor Abiodun’s leadership, offering prayers for the continued success of his administration’s final years.
