The average retail price of a litre of petrol in Nigeria saw a substantial decrease in November 2025, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The price fell to N1,061.35, marking a 12.59 per cent drop from the N1,214.17 recorded in the same month of the previous year, November 2024.
This represents a notable shift in fuel costs for consumers across the country. The NBS Petrol Price Watch report, published in Abuja, detailed the findings, highlighting the significant year-on-year reduction in the cost of this essential commodity. The figures indicate a positive trend for household budgets and transportation expenses.
However, when compared to the immediately preceding month, October 2025, the average retail price of petrol experienced a slight uptick. The price rose by 0.86 per cent from N1,052.31 in October to N1,061.35 in November, suggesting some localized price fluctuations or adjustments.
State-level data revealed significant regional disparities in petrol prices. Borno State recorded the highest average retail price at N1,133.86 per litre. Sokoto and Kogi followed, with prices at N1,118.83 and N1,111.00 per litre, respectively, indicating higher costs in these northern regions.
Conversely, consumers in Oyo, Nasarawa, and Lagos States benefited from lower prices. Oyo State registered the lowest average retail price at N997.39 per litre, with Nasarawa and Lagos at N1,015.12 and N1,021.14 per litre, respectively, pointing to more affordable fuel in these southern and central areas.
Analysis by geographical zones also illustrated these price differences. The North-East Zone reported the highest average retail price in October 2023 at N1,084.04, while the South-West Zone consistently offered the lowest prices at N1,036.12 per litre, reinforcing the trend observed in state-specific data.
In parallel, the NBS Diesel Price Watch Report for November 2025 indicated a decrease in diesel prices as well. The average retail price for a litre of diesel stood at N1,409.61, a 2.57 per cent reduction from the N1,446.83 per litre paid in November 2024.
Similar to petrol, diesel prices also saw a marginal increase on a month-on-month basis. The price rose by 0.79 per cent from N1,398.57 per litre in October 2025 to N1,409.61 in November 2025, reflecting minor market adjustments.
State-level diesel prices varied, with Niger State reporting the highest average price at N1,477.57 per litre. Jigawa and Enugu State followed closely, with prices at N1,477.31 and N1,468.29 per litre, respectively, indicating elevated costs in these areas.
The lowest diesel prices were observed in Kebbi State at N1,308.94 per litre, followed by Katsina at N1,315.78 and Nasarawa at N1,325.29 per litre, offering some relief to consumers in these states.
Zone-based analysis for diesel revealed that the South-East Zone experienced the highest average price at N1,419.34 per litre. In contrast, the South-South Zone recorded the lowest average price for diesel at N1,400.58 per litre, highlighting regional cost differences for this fuel.
The reports from the NBS provide crucial insights into the fluctuating cost of essential fuels, impacting both individual households and the broader economy. These price movements are closely watched indicators of economic conditions and inflationary pressures within Nigeria.
