Corruption is significantly hindering Nigeria’s potential by obscuring the nation’s inherent blessings, according to Ola Olukoyede, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). In a Christmas message delivered in Abuja, Olukoyede implored Nigerians to unite in a fierce fight against corruption, asserting that its eradication is crucial to unlocking the country’s full prosperity and strength.
Olukoyede articulated that corruption acts as a substantial impediment to Nigeria’s progress, preventing the realization of the abundant life divinely intended for the nation. He emphasized the need for collective action, stating, “Let’s join hands together to make our nation greater, stronger and richer. Corruption is a drawback. We should confront it more fiercely to allow the abundant life of God manifest in our nation.”
The EFCC chairman urged citizens to actively resist corrupt practices, fostering a collaborative effort to construct a nation that is not only stronger and more prosperous but also commands greater respect on the international stage. He stressed the importance of building a society where integrity and ethical conduct are paramount.
Furthermore, Olukoyede encouraged Nigerians to adopt the core values of love, light, and hope, as exemplified by Christ, deeming them indispensable for national advancement. He posited, “Nigeria needs the refreshing hope, love and light which Christ brought to the entire world,” suggesting these virtues are vital for societal renewal.
The commission’s chairman also voiced his support for President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, suggesting it should serve as a catalyst for confidence in Nigeria’s future and reignite belief in its capacity to surmount existing challenges. “Let the Renewed Hope agenda of Mr President ignite fresh hopes of revival in us that Nigeria will rise again,” Olukoyede stated.
This call to action comes at a critical juncture for Nigeria, a nation currently contending with significant economic hardship and declining public trust in governmental institutions. It also coincides with ongoing, intensive efforts by law enforcement agencies to curtail corruption and financial crimes throughout the country.
