Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) is advancing its ambitious design for OPPO’s new 185,000 square meter headquarters in Shenzhen, China. This vertical campus is poised to reshape the urban landscape, integrating cutting-edge workspace with accessible civic areas. The structure comprises four interconnected towers, each reaching approximately 200 meters or 42 floors, centered around a striking 20-story vertical lobby.
Two of these towers are dedicated to flexible office spaces, designed to maximize natural light and offer unobstructed views of Shenzhen Bay. The remaining two towers serve as crucial vertical circulation and service cores, ensuring efficient movement and operation throughout the expansive complex. This thoughtful organization allows for large, column-free floorplates, fostering a sense of openness and adaptability within the workspace.
At street level, the towers elegantly taper inward, creating a welcoming public realm that seamlessly connects the campus to the surrounding city. A landscaped plaza and a diagonal pedestrian pathway are integrated, providing direct access to the adjacent subway station and linking the site with neighboring streets.
The lower levels are designed as a vibrant hub, featuring retail spaces, restaurants, and an art gallery. This integration aims to solidify the headquarters’ role as a publicly engaged urban destination, inviting the community to interact with the architectural landmark. The design emphasizes a connected workplace environment, with multi-story atriums facilitating inter-departmental interaction and spontaneous collaboration.
Circulation routes are intentionally varied and layered, moving away from traditional corridors to enhance the feeling of dynamic movement throughout the building. The central 20-story vertical lobby acts as the project’s social and spatial spine, visually unifying the four towers and serving as a focal point for employee interaction and shared activities.
Beyond standard office functions, the headquarters offers elevated shared amenities designed to foster well-being and community. A Sky Plaza on the 10th floor provides dining and leisure facilities, while a rooftop Sky Lab offers breathtaking panoramic views of Shenzhen’s evolving skyline. These spaces position the headquarters as both a productive workplace and a significant gathering point.
To achieve sustainability goals, the project is targeting LEED Gold certification. This is supported by high-performance façades, integrated energy-management systems, and advanced 3D Building Information Modelling (BIM) techniques. These technologies are crucial for optimizing construction efficiency and ensuring long-term operational performance.
The tower configuration also plays a vital role in enhancing natural ventilation and daylight access, thereby significantly reducing the overall energy demand across the campus. OPPO, founded in 2008, has rapidly become a leading smartphone manufacturer with a substantial global presence across more than 40 countries.
Upon its completion, the Zaha Hadid Architects-designed OPPO headquarters is set to stand as a new architectural milestone in Shenzhen. It aims to redefine the concept of a corporate campus, envisioning it as a vertical, interconnected, and civic-minded space that benefits both its occupants and the wider city.
