A Vihiga County legal officer, Rachel Adhiambo, was brutally murdered while travelling home for Christmas, plunging her family into shock and grief. Adhiambo was on her way to a planned holiday reunion with her family in western Kenya when she met her tragic end.
Her journey began in Kisumu after attending her graduation ceremony at Kabarak University in Nakuru. She boarded a motorcycle taxi in Bondo late Friday night for the final leg of her trip home, a journey of approximately thirty kilometres.
Adhiambo’s sister, Marine Atieno, had expressed concerns about her travelling at night and urged her to wait for relatives. However, Rachel suggested they meet in Usenge town, a decision that would tragically alter their family’s festive plans.
Upon reaching Usenge, Marine could not locate her sister. A brief, disturbing phone call from Rachel indicated their motorcycle had run out of fuel and they were stranded on a rough road, a location that raised immediate alarm.
Fearing for her safety, Adhiambo’s family initiated a search the following morning. Her husband travelled to Bondo Hospital seeking any information, but the devastating news soon followed from the police.
Rachel Adhiambo’s body was discovered dumped by the roadside, a short distance from the Usenge Bondo highway. Preliminary reports suggest she was sexually assaulted, robbed of her personal belongings, and then murdered.
Her phone and other personal items were reported missing, compounding the brutality of the crime. Adhiambo, a mother of two, served diligently as a legal officer for the Vihiga County Government.
Her untimely death has sent shockwaves through her family and the wider community, as authorities launch a full investigation into the heinous crime. The family is left to grapple with immense loss during what should have been a time of celebration and togetherness.
