A police dispatch rider escorting Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s convoy has died after a fuel tanker collided with the procession. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday in Ibadan, Oyo State, shortly after Akpabio was picked up from the airport. The officer, identified as Ibrahim Hussaini, sustained fatal injuries and was buried earlier on Tuesday in Kogi State.
Senate President Akpabio informed lawmakers of the fatality during a plenary session, expressing deep sorrow for the loss of the officer. Hussaini, a dedicated member of the police force, leaves behind two wives and four children. Akpabio pledged to recommend two of the deceased officer’s senior children for employment within government parastatals or his private enterprises.
The dispatch rider, who served as part of Akpabio’s security detail since the latter assumed office as Senate President in 2023, was a Deputy Superintendent of Police. Senator Sunday Karimi, representing Kogi West, presented a motion on personal explanation to formally bring the matter before the Senate, highlighting Hussaini’s impending retirement next year.
Karimi also informed the Senate of another bereavement: the passing of Ibrahim Tukur, a long-serving driver for Senator Isah Jibrin of Kogi East. Tukur died at his residence on Saturday after a distinguished 25-year career. Senator Jibrin shared his personal reflections on Tukur’s dedication, noting his extensive service dating back to his own banking career.
The Senate session concluded with a somber moment as Akpabio requested senators to observe a minute of silence in honour of both Ibrahim Hussaini and Ibrahim Tukur. The dual losses underscore the inherent risks faced by those in public service and their support staff.
