The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has initiated a significant reorganisation in Borno State, appointing Hon. Adamu Usman Tubo as Chairman and Hon. Sunusi Lawan Badawi as Secretary of its Transitional Committee. This strategic move is designed to bolster the party’s presence and position it as a formidable contender ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The appointments come amidst a dynamic political landscape, marked by extensive realignments and defections across various political parties. The ADC aims to leverage this period of flux to establish itself as a viable alternative platform for voters in Borno State, seeking to consolidate political opposition.
Hon. Tubo, who hails from the Southern Borno Senatorial District, and Hon. Badawi, from the Borno North Senatorial District, bring diverse regional representation to the party’s leadership in the state. Their selection underscores the ADC’s commitment to inclusive leadership and broad-based political engagement.
A circular issued by Hon. Mohammed Abba Kyari, Assistant National Organising Secretary and North-East Organising Secretary of the ADC, detailed the influx of prominent politicians into the party. These individuals have reportedly defected from major opposition and ruling parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party, Social Democratic Party (SDP), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
Among the notable figures joining the ADC coalition are former APC chieftain Mattawali Kashim Ibrahim-Imam, former APC governorship aspirant Alhaji Idris Mamman Durkwa, and former NNPP senatorial candidate Alhaji Attom Magira. The party also welcomed former House Minority Leader Barrister Mohammed Kumalia, who previously sought governorship on the APC ticket and contested a senatorial seat with the PDP.
Further strengthening the ADC’s state-level leadership are former Speakers of the Borno State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Bukar Kachallah and Rt. Hon. Bulama Fugu. Youth stakeholders, including Hon. Sheriff Banki, Hon. Abba Haruna, and Hon. Abba Masta, have also joined the party, signalling a comprehensive approach to political recruitment.
The circular, dated December 18, 2025, and originating from the party’s Abuja headquarters, has gained significant traction. It was officially copied to key national party officials, including National Chairman Senator David Mark, National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, and National Organising Secretary Barrister Chinedu Odigbo, last Thursday.
In his explanatory note, Hon. Kyari emphasised the rigorous selection process for the transitional committee members. He highlighted that the committee’s composition was based on a thorough consideration of candidates’ political backgrounds, local government representation, federal constituencies, and senatorial districts, ensuring a balanced and representative leadership structure.
This strategic appointment and the reported defections signal a concerted effort by the ADC to build momentum and establish a strong grassroots presence in Borno State. The party appears poised to challenge established political forces as the 2027 elections draw nearer.
