Anambra State’s Auditor-General, Mr. Akosa Okocha, has revealed that Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) within the state are currently unable to account for N750 million in the 2024 fiscal year. This revelation comes as a significant concern, though it represents an improvement from the previous year’s financial performance.

Speaking at the 2025 Audit Forum and Citizens Accountability Dialogue in Awka, Okocha highlighted that the amount of unresolved financial queries has been substantially reduced. In the 2023 fiscal year, the value of outstanding queries stood at approximately N2.5 billion, a figure that has now dropped to N750 million for 2024.

Okocha attributed this positive development to proactive measures implemented by his office. He noted that several MDAs have responded to previous queries by submitting documented evidence to clarify financial discrepancies. This improved engagement signifies a step towards greater financial transparency within the state government apparatus.

Despite the progress, a principal consultant, Mr. Ademola Okeleye, urged for intensified efforts to resolve all outstanding queries from the 2024 accounts. He emphasized that such resolutions are crucial for bolstering public confidence in corporate governance and encouraging citizens to fulfill their tax obligations.

Other experts, including Professor Tochukwu Okafor from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, and Dr. Adokwe Ekene, underscored the critical role of enhanced auditing practices. They stated that robust auditing is indispensable for improving service delivery across Nigeria and for effectively combating corruption, promoting transparency, and ensuring accountability.
