PDP Crisis Deepens: Factions Clash Over Party Headquarters

Another internal power struggle is brewing within Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). News suggests two factions are on a collision course, both aiming to control the party’s national headquarters, Wadata Plaza. The dispute centers around a scheduled meeting, with each side claiming legitimacy.

The Wike-backed group is pushing for an “emergency” NEC gathering. Yet, Tanimu Turaki, the newly elected National Chairman, is also planning an inaugural NWC meeting at the same location. To that end, he has requested police protection, anticipating conflict.

This challenge arises from a disputed national convention, leading to expulsions and further division. Turaki insists those issuing competing meeting notices are no longer party members, a claim that fuels the fire. It’s worth noting that the expelled members have a different interpretation of the convention’s outcome.

The situation escalated as Turaki asserted the NWC’s determination to take control of the party’s assets. “Anyone sitting there without our consent is an interloper,” he stated. This aggressive stance raises concerns about potential clashes.

The police, caught in the middle, have assured protection. Still, whether they can prevent a breakdown of order remains to be seen. This isn’t the first time the PDP has faced internal strife, and these kinds of skirmishes can escalate quickly.
