Super Eagles in Crisis: Players Boycott Training Just Days Before Huge World Cup Qualifier

Okay, so, things aren’t exactly smooth sailing for the Super Eagles right now. Big time turmoil, actually. Players and staff? They boycotted training Tuesday. Yep. Over, well, unresolved bonus payments. And other payment stuff. It’s kinda messy.

They’re supposed to be prepping in Rabat, Morocco, for the World Cup qualifier playoff against Gabon. You know, that HUGE game on Thursday? And instead of training, they’re… not. They only managed one training session on Monday.

Word coming out of Morocco, I guess, is that basically the whole squad, including the staff, skipped today’s session. All of them. Waiting for a “quick resolution” – their words, not mine – before Thursday’s game. Quick, huh? Good luck with that, guys.

Here’s the thing: these bonus issues? They go way back. Like, 2019 back. Honestly? None of the Super Eagles players have even seen their allowances or bonuses for making it to the 2025 AFCON and 2026 World Cup playoffs. Which, you know, isn’t great.

The players even put out a statement. A real, official statement to confirm the boycott on Tuesday. Let me just grab that…

“The following statement from the Super Eagles players and staff:” they said. Classic, no-frills statement.

“The full squad, including officials, boycotted training today in Morocco because of the unresolved issues with outstanding payments.”

And then, “The Super Eagles are awaiting a quick resolution to continue the preparation for Thursday’s game with Gabon. Thank you. From the players.” Short and to the point. They need that money, and they need it now.

Two days. The boycott is happening just two days before the all-important game against Gabon. I mean, seriously?

As of Tuesday night—which is, uh, well, right now—there are 23 players in camp. Maduka Okoye is the only one that hasn’t joined up yet. So, they have almost everyone, just not… paid. Talk about motivation, or lack thereof, right? Right. Or maybe… it’s about respect too?
